Study Conference: Francesco Maria Ruspoli and his world – 10th Anniversary International Competition

As part of the initiatives celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition, the Santa Giacinta Marescotti Studies and Research Center of Vignanello dedicates a study meeting to Francesco Maria Ruspoli, née Marescotti (Vignanello 1672 – Rome 1731), first Prince of Cerveteri and sixth Count of Vignanello. He was a key figure in Rome, a capital of European culture in the early eighteenth century, a patron of the Accademia di Arcadia and of great names in music. This study meeting is held at a site of high symbolic value, the Ruspoli Castle in Vignanello, which was Francesco Maria’s birthplace, at the top of the historic village that owes its modern urban structure to him. It was also the cradle of Saint Giacinta Marescotti, beatified during Francesco Maria’s lifetime and later proclaimed a saint. The Roman nobleman’s patronage activity has garnered international interest in historical studies for hosting the young Handel, repaid with numerous works composed for him or under his protection. This line of study has been extensively explored and perhaps exhausted, as shown by the recent publication of Ursula Kirkendale’s volume, Georg Friedrich Händel, Francesco Maria Ruspoli e Roma, LIM, 2017. However, despite the great international development of historical-musical studies on Francesco Maria, and partly historical-artistic ones, the same has not occurred with respect to other disciplinary areas. This study meeting therefore aims to contribute to a greater and broader understanding of Francesco Maria’s personality and interests, which would allow for a fruitful focus on his complex role in the political, economic, cultural, and religious life of the time, in addition to more adequately contextualizing his patronage activity, whose centrality and relevance is now an undisputed fact.
