The B-side of Rome: in Handel’s footsteps

The article by Gilles Denis, published in the French newspaper Les Echos in May 2014, titled “La face B de Rome: sur les pas de Haendel”, offers a journey through the lesser-known locations of the composer George Frideric Haendel in Rome at the beginning of the 18th century. The text highlights the fundamental role of the Ruspoli Family, who became the official protectors of the young prodigy.

The article emphasizes that Haendel resided, composed, and conducted intimate works at the Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello, the family’s country residence. Bridging to the present day, the newspaper notes that the castle “is reborn” annually with the organization of the Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli Baroque Music Competition, which celebrates the patronage of the ancestor of the same name.

The text underscores the historical importance of the Competition in keeping the tradition of Baroque music alive, following the path outlined by Prince Ruspoli.
