Subject and aims

Centro Studi e Ricerche Santa Giacinta Marescotti in Vignanello promotes the IV edition 2012 of International  Competition Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli.

a)  To honour Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli, prominent figure of Roman Baroque and great patron of Artists as Jacques Hotteterre “Le Romain”, Georg Friedrich Händel, Antonio Caldara, Benedetto Marcello, and poets of Academy of Arcadia, by reinventing his patronage and passion for arts and music;

b)  To find and give expressive form to the genius loci, represented by the music of Baroque   period, which embodied the identity of Vignanello and Castello Ruspoli during the court of Prince Francesco Maria. He made his court one of the main cultural centres of his time, equating to the other noble European residences;

c)  To create an opportunity for launching young talents in the field of historically informed performance of music of the Baroque era (17th and 18th centuries), who could relive the atmosphere of Ruspoli Castle, where many important artistic events took place;

d)  To range over different disciplines of music, alternating singing sections with instruments, and exploring new techniques also in modern way;

e)  To promote research and study in musicological sectors, from historical and archival researches about the patronage to the inquiry on expressive languages, musical and iconographic sources, and musical instruments in the Baroque Period (17th and 18th centuries).

Sections

The 2012 Edition of Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition consists of two sections which are both dedicated to the Baroque period:

–         Instrumental Section (Viola da gamba)

–         Musicology Section

 

 

INSTRUMENTAL SECTION

Admission

1.1 – Are admitted all Italian and foreign citizens who have come to age and have not turned 30 before the expiration date (July 31st, 2012).

1.2 – The admission of the candidate in one section of Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition does not exclude the candidate from taking part in another section.

1.3 – The attendance to previous editions of  Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli Competition does not represent a reason for the exclusion to the current contest.

 

Art.2 – Application

2.1 – Candidates should send the application form, available at Centro Studi’s web-sitewww.centrostudisgm.it in the section especially dedicated to the 2012 edition, no later than July 31th , 2012. Documents forwarded after this date will not be considered valid for the competition.

2.2 – In order to complete the registration procedures it is necessary to attach the documents listed below, in contrary case the application will be rejected.

Documents to be sent:

  1. DVD audio-video with the recording of his performance; as an alternative the candidate can upload the recording on line, sending the link by e-mail in order to preview the performance; if the candidate is not able to produce a video recording, he will be allowed to send either a CD audio or audio recording in Mp3 format of his performance (in this case he can send a pen drive with the file of the performance) providing that the size does not exceed 20 megabytes. Performance will follow the instructions indicated in art. 4.
  2. Curriculum vitae;
  3. a photocopy of valid ID;
  4. two photographs in digital format (jpg, gif graphic formats or similar) that will be used by the Secretary of the Research Center to promote the event;
  1. The Authorization for the reproduction of sounds and image files (Liberatoria) signed, available on section “Competition 2012″ of the website.
  1. two copies of the Sheet Music which possibly will be performed during the finals.

Art. 3 The Jury

The jury for the Competition will be the same for the preliminary tests as well as for the Final test.

Art.4 – Tests

The candidates must pass two tests in order to enter the Competition. They are structured as follows.

4.1 –  Preliminary round

4.1.1 – The trial for preliminary round will be based on watching/listening the recordings presented to the jury, as in art. 2.2, for this reason it is very important the execution of the piece, and a good audio/video recording.

4.1.2 – The candidate will have to follow these instructions, select the repertoire to perform and record it to be submitted at the judgment of the jury:

– duration of program:                       25′ – 30′

– repertoire:                                     pieces of music for Viol (also known as viola da gamba)                                                                datable  to around the second half of the 17th century                                                                and the first half of the 18th century

– organic:                                         the program should be divided in two parts:

1) Viol unaccompanied (not less than 10′ and no more                                                                than 15′)

2) viola accompanied with harpsichord or other instrument                                                            of basso continuo

4.1.3 – The commission will select 6 (six) candidates who will have the right to pass to the second and last round of selection.

4.2 –  Final Exam

4.2.1 – The final exam will be open to the public and will be performed at Castello Ruspoli, on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 at 14.30 p.m.

4.2.2 – The candidate will have to follow these instructions to prepare the repertoire to perform:

– duration of program:                       25′ – 30′

– repertoire:                                     pieces of music for viol (viola da gamba) datable  to                                                                     around the second half of the 17th century and the                                                                   first half of the 18th century must be different                                                                           from those presented at the preliminary performance)

– organic:                                         the program should be divided in two parts:

1) viola da gamba unaccompanied (not less                                                                                 than 10′ and no more than 15′)

2) viola accompanied with harpsichord, including                                                                         the obligatory piece  indicated in the next point

– obligatory piece:                             G. F. Händel, Sonata HWV 364b in G minor for viol                                                                       (viola da gamba) and basso continuo

– criteria:                                          The candidate can choose his own repertoire,                                                                           nevertheless he must consider that through                                                                               his choice he has to demonstrate to the jury both                                                                       his own artistic skills and his command of the instrument.

4.2.3 – The organization of the Competition will provide a harpsichord and a harpsichordist; those who prefer, can bring their own accompanist and they will have to communicate his/her name at the moment of the application.

 

 

Art. 5 – Six finalists

5.1 – The six finalists approved on the first round will be able to come to Castello Ruspoli, on Friday, October 5th, 2012 in the afternoon.

5.2 – The finalists will be able to receive, under request, the attendance certification to the finals of the competition. It will be issued after the performance.

 

Art. 6 – Final Presentation

6.1 – The prize consist of a cheque for  € 2000,00 and will be presented on Sunday, October 7th, 2012 at Ruspoli Castle of Vignanello. The winner will perform as a soloist in the final concert. Then one more piece of music will be performed by the winner together with two especially deserving finalists chosen by the jury as indicated in art. 9.

6.2 – Centro Studi offers to the winner the recording of the pieces  performed of the Sunday concert, October 7th, 2012 by the sound engineer Antonio Cenciarelli in collaboration with the Accademia Brunelli di Civita di Bagnoregio, and 5 (five) copies of the CD.

 

Art. 7 – The Assessment

The Assessments are final, unquestionable and definite.

7.1 – The jurors, based on their experience and expertise, will choose the six candidates who will enter the finals according to the records received, and will assign a score ranging from 0 to 10. The six candidates who obtain the highest scores will pass to the final test.

7.2 – The results of the preliminary round will be published on the Centre’s website on September 7th, 2012.

7.3 – The judgment for the final test will be given individually by each member of the jury, in scores ranging from 0 to 10. The jury reserves the right to require the repetition of a piece already performed. The President of the Jury, after collecting the votes from the other members of the jury, will sum the votes of each candidate, thus designating the winner of the competition.

7.4 – The results will be announced at the end of the hearings, together with the announcement of the winner.

7.5 – In case of ex aequo, scores will be re-examined and there will be debates and a second round judging. In the event the jury could not determine a single winner, it will be the President of the Jury to choose the winner and assign the Prize.

 

Art.8 – Record and order to final test

8.1 – The Research Centre will provide the rooms of Ruspoli Castle for the rehearsals on Friday, October 5th, 2012 starting at 9:00 a.m. Each candidate will have the room available for up to 30 minutes.

8.2 – The order of performances will be decided as data entries are received and candidates will be informed by the Centre’s secretary office about the date and time they will have to present themselves for test at the Castello Ruspoli.

8.3 – The order of final performances will be chosen by lot. Candidates who do not show up on Saturday, October 6th, 2012, will be automatically excluded from the Competition.

 

Art. 9 – The program of the final concert will be defined by the committee at the end of the day Saturday, October 6th, 2012 after the performance of all the finalists.

The program could contemplate:

– the pieces presented in the final performance

– G. F. Händel, Sonata HWV 364b

– the pieces presented at the preliminary performance

– Marin Marais, Ciaccona, for two viols and basso continuo, from the Premier libre de Pièces de Viole, Paris, 1686, pp. 105-114
Art.10 – Due to circumstances beyond our control, attested needs or in  case the number of candidates does not reach the minimum of 10 musicians, the Organization reserves the right to cancel the Competition, only in this case registration fee will be refunded.

Art.11 – The organization assumes no liability for any damage to persons or property during the conduct of the competition.

Art.12 – Candidates and harpsichordists have no rights regarding audio/visual recordings made during the competition or final concert.

Art.13 – Santa Giacinta Marescotti Research Centre is funding lodging expenses for finalists only, but not travelling expenses. Accompanying people will benefit from a special accommodation package that the organization will put forward.

Art.14 – According to Article 10 of Law 675/96 on “protection of personal data” we assure that candidate’s personal information will be used exclusively to send notices on the competition, excluding all and any other use.

Art.15 – Entry constitutes entrants’ full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these rules.

 

 

 

MUSICOLOGICAL SECTION

Art.1 – Admission

1.1 – Are admitted to the competition all Italian and foreign citizens with no age limit;

1.2 – Students and scholars in the areas of  musicology and history of music;

1.3 – Are not admitted to  the Competition:

–   Those who over the past two years have had educational or professional relationships with at least one of the jurors;

–   Those who already have a contract  with publishers;

–   Groups of two or more people.

1.4 – The admission of the candidate in one section of Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli International Competition does not exclude the participant from taking part in another section.

1.5 – The attendance of the candidate on a previous editions does not represent a reason for the exclusion to the current contest

 

Art.2 – The Jury

Centro Studi Santa Giacinta Marescotti has a technical jury composed of recognized personalities from music and culture areas, who are members of institutions and organizations which operate as well in musical and cultural fields.

Members of the jury:

Prof. Giorgio Monari, Sapienza University of Rome and Pontifical Gregorian University (President of the jury)

Prof. Dinko Fabris, Piccinni Conservatory of Bari and Basilicata University Potenza

Prof. Manuel Carlos De Brito, Universidade Nova di Lisbona (Portugal)

 

 

Art.3 – The Assessment

3.1 – Reviews by an absolute majority, is final and definite.

3.2 – To ensure greater transparency, the assessment work will be submitted to the jury anonymously.  Secretariat of the Centro Studi is committed to the secrecy of the author’s identity in a special envelope that will be made known to the jury only after the issuance of the verdict.

3.3 – The jury carefully evaluates the essays in competition, chooses one according to relevant cultural and scientific criteria, originality and literary quality criteria, and will indicate, if present, other essays which are worthy of  publication. The verdict will be announced on September 17th, 2012 on Centro Studi’s web-site (www.centrostudisgm.it ) in the Special Section dedicated to the Competition. The winner will be contacted directly by the Secretariat of the Competition, and should come to Castello Ruspoli for the Award Ceremony on Sunday, October 7th, 2012.

 

Art.4 – Application

4.1 – Candidates should send the application form, available at Centro Studi’s web-sitewww.centrostudisgm.it in the section especially dedicated to the 2012 edition, no later than July 31th, 2012. Documents forwarded after this date will not be considered valid for the competition.

4. 2 – Documents to be sent :

  1. historical musicology essays in typescript (otherwise, the essays will be excluded from the competition), in triplicate accompanied by an electronic medium (CD);
  2. curriculum vitae;
  3. a photocopy of valid document;
  4. two photographs in digital format (jpg, gif graphic formats or similar) that will be used by the Secretary of the Research Center for promoting of the event;
  1. 4.3 – This documentation can be sent either by e-mail to centrostudisgm@mail.com and by post to Centro Studi e Ricerche Santa Giacinta Marescotti, Via della Vittoria, 33 – 01039 Vignanello (VT) ITALY.

4.4 – The Candidates must respect the following criteria:

a) The length of the historical-musicological essays must be between 20 and 120 pages, in A4 format, double-spaced font 12 (note character 10), 30 lines per page;

b) The historical-musicological essays should address to any particular issue, author, composition or other subject in relation to “Patronage and music in the European courts between XVII and XVIII centuries”;

c)  Each candidate may submit more than one work and in this case, the amount of  € 20,00 must be paid for each essay sent in addition to the first;

d) Essays must be original and unpublished ,and must not have been presented in similar competitions (thesis discussed at any university are allowed if not discussed prior to the academic year of 2009/2010);

e) Essays may be written in Italian, English, French, German, Portuguese or Spanish;

f)  The works will not be returned. They will be kept at the library of Centro Studi.

 

Art.5 – Award

5.1 – The contest offers to the winner  author, and in case, to other authors of volume by Centro Studi Santa Giacinta Marescotti, along with 5 free copies of the work. The authors will be called upon on October 7th , 2012 for the presentation of the work during the Award ceremony.

5.2 – Centro Studi offers to the winning author, a cash prize of  € 500,00 at the moment of launch.

 

Art.6 – The organization of the Competition reserves the right to cancel the performance in case the minimum number of candidates (3) is not reached. Only in this case will the registration fee will be refunded.

Art.7 – The organization assumes no liability for any damage to persons or property during the conduct of the competition.

Art.8 – Candidates have no rights regarding audio/visual recordings made during the competition or final concert.

Art.9 – Candidates are responsible for their own travel, sojourn, sand fees, among other. Candidates will benefit from preferential rates for accommodation and restaurants that will be provided by the Organization Committee of the Competition.

Art.10 – In respect to Article 10 of Law No. 675/96 on  “protection of  personal data”, it is informed that the information given when registering will be only used with the purpose of sending information about the competition, excluding any and all other use.

Art.11 – Entering in the Competition implies the unconditional acceptance of this regulation.
